Finepart used an FAW200 system to test a 1.1 mm Nitinol surgical clip with sections down to 100 µm.
The application
The clip combined medical-material requirements with very narrow sections and a need for a clean cut edge.
Historic result
The published application reported a cutting rate of 72 mm/min and a cycle time of 110 seconds, with no burr, oxide or slag and no observed material-structure change.
Next step today
The case shows why a cold cutting process can be attractive for Nitinol. Current tolerances and functional requirements must be confirmed on the actual part.
