Finepart Sweden AB has updated the standard specification for positioning accuracy and repeatability in its 3-axis Finecut micro waterjet systems. The update is based on verified performance from delivered systems and reflects the technical maturity of the platform.
Waterjet Cutting Specification: ±1.5µm Positioning Accuracy
The updated specification sets positioning accuracy at ±1.5 µm (previously ±2.5 µm) and repeatability at ±1.5 µm (previously ±2.0 µm). These values apply to newly produced Finecut 3-axis waterjet systems and are verified during installation and commissioning, ensuring that the specified performance is achieved in real operating conditions.
How Finecut Achieves Sub-2µm Waterjet Precision
The performance increase is the result of coordinated development across the full system architecture. Increased structural stiffness and improved thermal stability reduce geometric deviations across the working envelope, particularly under dynamic load. At the same time, refinements in motion control and interpolation provide smoother path execution and higher positional resolution, especially in complex geometries. This is further strengthened by tighter system integration between CNC, drive systems, and measurement feedback, minimizing latency and cumulative errors. Enhanced calibration and compensation methodologies ensure consistent system performance over time.
What ±1.5µm Means for Precision Waterjet Cutting
Finecut is based on micro abrasive waterjet technology, a non-thermal cutting process where system precision directly defines the final result. With no heat-affected zone, no microstructural alteration, and no tool-induced stress, the mechanical and dynamic performance of the machine becomes the dominant factor for part quality.
The improved positioning capability therefore translates directly into higher geometric accuracy, improved edge quality, and reduced variation between parts.
Practical Precision in Production
In practical terms, this level of system precision enables typical achievable geometry tolerances of approximately ±10 µm in 3-axis mode, depending on the material and application. These enhancements promote repeatable motion paths and reduce tolerance variations, resulting in a stable and predictable process window for advanced materials and demanding geometries.
Technical Deep Dive: Micro Waterjet Motion Control
“This has not been driven by one isolated change, but by how the entire system performs as an integrated whole. When structure, motion control, and calibration are optimized simultaneously, the effect becomes multiplicative. That is what allows us to move both positioning accuracy and repeatability to this level while maintaining long-term stability.”

Why Sub-2µm Accuracy Matters for Aerospace and Medical
“The updated specification reflects the actual performance we are delivering today. For our customers, this means higher predictability in production and greater confidence in applications where tolerance and material integrity are critical. It strengthens our position in advanced precision manufacturing and supports our customers in pushing the limits of what is manufacturable.”

Upgrading Existing Finecut Waterjet Systems
For already installed systems, upgrades may be possible in certain cases, depending on system configuration and technical evaluation.
Summary: Finecut Sets New Industry Standard for Waterjet Accuracy
This update confirms that the Finecut platform has reached a new level of system precision, where machine structure, motion control, and process physics operate in alignment to deliver consistent micron-level performance in industrial production.
